Refuse to be SAD

Hey, all J
As winter is coming along, I noticed (and surely you did too) that the colors all around the city are getting darker and duller. Girls, guys, men and women slip into their fall/winter clothes, mainly dark colors, brown, black, and grey. Why is this?

Researching and asking friends and relatives of their opinion on this issue, I came along with the term “Season Affective Disorder”. SAD comes along in mid fall, lasts all winter long, and gradually goes away in spring. Without getting into much detail, I will only add that the symptoms for SAD are stress and depression, increased need for sleep, lack of energy, and constant craving for snacks and sweets. Sadly, all of these are usually accompanied by weight gain.

So how does this relate to clothing, you will ask? Well, there is a direct connection. If let’s say you have gained weight, the first thing that goes through your mind is to visually shed some pounds away by wearing black or dark grey. If you are feeling stressed or depressed, the colors you wear are most likely to include dark shades to reflect your mood. Lastly, when you are outside, where the weather is miserable and disgusting, the surrounding is dull and people are walking around with gloomy faces, most if the time you just want to blend in.

This said, I suggest changing the trend and excluding the possibility of being SAD. If you want the sweets, you can have them, just do some 200 push-ups and sit-ups before or after( I know, I know, but surely it's doable), feeling depressed, go out with the friends, surely they will cheer you up, you don’t like the weather, well it’s just temporary, so be the first to cheer up!

Do you like the idea? Well, then go ahead and lighten up! Say no to those dark colors or if you’re not ready for such a change, then make sure you have something light and why not bright in your outfit.  These could include colorful accessories, such as scarves and hats and, of course, jewelry. Dark pants can be combined with sweater of a lighter color and so on.

P.S. Please, be advised that by saying bright colors, I did not mean artificial colors like neon green or  yellow. However, if you can pull it off, then go ahead, the choice is yours!

  2. I would say that it is more an issue of perception, I assume that people want to be perceived nore seriouly, more solid and more mature in dark colors. I personally like grey with bright combinations of pink, light green, blue, etc... Several times in winter I wear my favourite hat and scarve of spring green color with black jacket :))))

  4. I absolutely agree with you but own up that dressing pattern in Armenia is from one extreme to another. Girls clothed in bright incompatible colors are not rarely met either. I think it's just the matter of the absence of dressing culture, taste, and sometimes scarcity of the choice;))

  5. Ani, you're right! The bright incompatible colors are a trend we see a lot, especially, in summers! Although I was not in Yerevan during summer of 2006, I still hear comments of how our girls were wearing green, yellow and red clothes, simultaneously...:)))
