Blackomania or Subculture Within a Culture?

I was always thinking why many of Armenian men like to wear black clothes: black jacket, black shirt, black pants, black shoes, black socks (hopefully not red socks). They wear black all the time, wherever they go, whatever they do.

Why are they buying only black? Isn’t any other color out there? Don't get me wrong, a man wearing black suggests elegance, authority and power. But when I see groups of people in black who are not going to a funeral, there is something suspicious in it, isn’t it?
Well, to make it clear I made a small research and revealed the truth about these guys in black.
They always appear in groups, sit in the arbors, play backgammon, squat, smoke cheap cigarettes, listen to Rabiz, wear “Tsitsak koshik” (pointy shoes), and they think black is cool. See how many common characteristics they have?
I can even say they have become a cluster within a culture. If you are one of them, then, congratulations, you are a real Qyartu!

As Georgia O'Keeffe, an American artist, once  said, "There's something about black. You feel hidden away in it.”

Maybe it is the absence of individuality that they are hiding under black, and that is why they always appear in groups, or maybe not. Who knows… ?

  1. Hahaha... Nice post. :) It's difficult to separate their tastes from their beliefes. We can say that it's something like a belief, because such people have their own "truth", own traditions and habits. :) and as you said it's a subculture within a culture. :)

  2. Yes, You're right! The Armenian boys like the "black" color very much. But nowadays I see the tendency of wearing colorful clothes and it makes me feel happy :)

  3. Nicely written: however what I would like to mention about the last point e.g hiding personality, is that majority of them feel they are expressing themselves in such a "unique" way, rather than hiding their personality.

P.S although wearing black is an essential integral of being inaugurated to "Quartu", it doesn't guarantee you of becoming one...
